Great when it works

We love the ice when it works. You need to use distilled water for it to last longer than 2 years. We used filtered water and did regular cleaning and descaling the calcium deposits. Ultimately the float sensor broke randomly. The machine just keeps on saying add water. Did everything I could to troubleshoot it. Seems like a major issue as a lot of people have the same problem.

Gives us trouble

I have had to return this machine twice. The ice maker does not perform as stated. On both machines we keep receiving error messages saying, "fill water", which both water reservoirs are filled. It says "Descale" and we keep descaling even though we have a filtration system, and water softener, so we dont understand why we have to keep cleaning it. The ice does not stay solid but melts really fast. and the machine makes a really loud squealing noise. Both machines have both had the same issue.

This machine looks good and makes ice when it wants to. We haven't had this machine for long and it seems to be already needing maintenance. It currently makes a very loud noise which apparently means it needs to defrost. Not at all what we were expecting.

When it works the ice is great. But the machine is consistent and does not always work, often creating a high pitched squeal that is only stopped by unplugging and not using. This is my second machine as the first was returned after 2 weeks for the exact same issue. I™€™ve only had this one for 3 months. I clean and descale it very regularly but it is honestly not worth the trouble. Will be seeing refund

Love the Ice nuggets. The Ultra is upgrade from the 1 and 2 I had. Irritating on sanitize. Every 25 hours. This is actually a very good plus. I am sanitizing it once a week. This is most likely reason previous two opals, as I only cleaned once every 2or 3 weeks. Great product and best of all other icemakers imo.

Fast and quiet

So far so good. It makes ice QUICKLY. It entertains our cats for hours. It is heavy so moving it about to clean etc is challenging.... I will probably invest in a cute bucket for it. The user manual is very easy to understand. Clean all components before using. It is quiet compared to other ice makers I have seen.

The ice capacity from the Opal is incredible. I can use this machine for parties or family dinners and not run out of ice. The descaling process is easy - just one push of a button to clean the unit. It does take ~50min. But it is easy enough to drain, add the cleaning solution, push the clean button and let it run. Then a quick rinse with clean water and you are good to go. The water filter is easy to install and the design looks great on my countertop.

Great ice maker that doesn't take up much space. Easy to install and operate. The crushed ice is perfect! My only issue is with the instructions. After initially cleaning and rinsing, it says to fill internal reservoir first, then the side tank. When I did this properly, the side tank pushed water all over the counter and cabinets as the internal tank partially fills the bottom of the side tank receptacle. It should say to fill the side tank first, then place onto the unit, THEN fill the internal reservoir. We still love it!

Crappy machine and customer service

I purchased this model after my 2.0 wouldn™€™t quit going into defrost mode., but I™€™d gotten good use out of it. I got this in November and have maybe gotten 4 uses out of it. And those only made two batches of ice before it starts making the horrendous squealing noise. I can™€™t just turn it off, I have to actually unplug it. I™€™ve been buying ice at Sonic but our local store is closing so called customer service to see what can be done. CS Rep, Ray, kept harping on descaling and cleaning it. It™€™s barely been used and when it was it was with filtered, not distilled, water. Although when reading the reviews and responses from GE, one said not to use distilled water and another said they recommend distilled water. This is an expensive unit for it not to work and for the lack of customer ™€œservice™€. On top of everything he kept cutting out and I couldn™€™t understand him. Gist of it was send it in and they™€™ll see what they can do but it™€™ll be at least two weeks because it™€™s a ™€œprocess™€. I bought Geek Squad coverage so will see if I get better service there. I™€™m sure I™€™ll just get a response from GE saying they™€™re going to contact me via email as with all the others.

I had the older model of this and it was great! Actually kept the ice cold, came with a bigger side tank, all in all it was a great machine until it stopped making ice. I upgraded to this one because that™€™s the only one I could get locally and this thing is a piece of junk! My ice is constantly melting. The side tank I have to refill at least twice a day because it™€™s so much smaller than the other one. The older one I could refill my side tank maybe once a day and it would last. I hate his machine and really wish I could™€™ve gotten the older model because this thing is junk. Not to mention all of the connecting issues and poor design. Definitely go with the older model if you can.

This is the fourth Opal Ice Maker. I got the first prior to Christmas 2025 and it lasted till January 2026. The noise coming from it sounded like gears destroying themselves. Next one lasted two weeks with same results. The third lasted from the end of January till 20 March 2026. Just got my fourth Opal 2 on 22 March 2026. All were under warranty but GE needs to fix this problem. Reviews also sound the alarm about this problem. At a price of over $400 with warranty it should last for years.

Quality product... just needs a few tweaks

Love the size and quality of the ice and noticed positive improvement between this unit and our original GE Opal machine. The ice capacity remains the same but the actual ice production on this one seems much faster. Tried to connect via app but we are missing the code on the back of the machine so cannot complete set up process to connect via Wi-Fi. The only other issue we have encountered was a terrible squeaking noise (like a belt on a vehicle) which made us unplug the unit for awhile then plugged it back in awhile later. Went through this roughly a dozen times but stopped when we had made up our minds to box it back up and return it. While the general design remains the same, we do like the added features such as the Scale Inhibiting Filter, fan motor filter and ice scoop with the magnetic holder. Would like to see an option whereas we could splice and connect a direct water line off the refrigerator to the machine as it seems as if we have to put "fill side tank" on our daily list of things to do. (Yes, we go through a lot of ice, which leads me to the worst part of owning the machine and the reason it does not get 4 or even 5 stars... the sanitizing and cleaning portion. Absolutely dislike the overall process and frequency in which we have to do this. Very time consuming process and would hope for additional filtration processes or another maintenance solution to reduce this... to the likes of the ice machine in our refrigerator which just requires filter replacements every 3 months. Overall.. quality product that just needs a few tweaks in order to be perfect.

Opal 2.0 Ultra with Side Tank is an awesome design

I just love the Opal 2.0 Ultra Ice Maker! So far it is very quiet and that Side Tank is the best part of the ice maker. It never runs out of water since I can see the level now. Of course, the ice quality is top-notch!

product makes ice for 1-2 days then unit makes loud screeching sound. have tried cleaning unit also unplugging unit for a day. very disappointed

[Employee of ge_appliances] I've only had it setup for 5 days...So Far - So Good - No issues connecting to Wi-Fi. Ice bin holds a good amount of ice, producing it in a timely manner. It's not too loud, basically a small fan running. Like the light feature and being able to brighten/dim/turn off. Descaling feature is why I chose this model.
